Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary in Horodenka

Horodenka is one of the oldest towns in Prykarpattia, which is washed by the sonorous springs and heavy waters of the Dniester and Prut rivers. The popular belief is that a rooster sings on three corners in Horodenka - on three regions - Ternopol, Chernovtsy and Ivano-Frankovsk. Therefore these or maybe other reasons attracted tycoon Nicholas Potocki, who had large estates in Podolia and Pokuttia, decided to turn this city into his own, magnate’s capital. He strongly promoted the development of craftsmanship, trade and construction in Horodenka. Not sparing financial resources for the construction of temples.

Nicholas Potocki allocated a huge amount of money for the construction of Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the Missionary monastery in Horodenka. For the construction, he invited a famous Italian architect Bernard Meretinni, for whom this was the first monumental work on Ukrainian soil. Johann Pinzel, no less famous and talented sculptor, kept his company. The construction began in 1743. And it had been lasting for nearly 17 years. Incidentally, this was their first collaboration work, which had so impressed Potocki, that he invited them to perform a few operations in Horodenka and Buchach. Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is really like a dream come true of believers about a temple.

Its vaulted cellars impress with their expanse. The gallery is made in form of numerous small balconies along the stone walls of the building. And frescoes of the XVIII century remained to this day in the eastern building. Pinzel made the iconostasis, pulpit, altar, above which there is the image of the Mother of God, and two small altars. By the way, several works of Pinzel from the temple are exhibited in the museum of the sculptor in Lviv. And a stele with an original sculpture of the wizard - the figure of the Virgin Mary in front of the temple is preserved.

In the 30's of XIX century a bell tower was completed, and an elegant wrought-iron fence around the church was installed instead of the defense wall running. It should be noted, that many architectural elements of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is repeated in Lviv Church of St. Yura. In Soviet times, there was a vocational school in the premises of the temple. Much has been irrevocably lost. So, 13 out of 18 sculptures of the altar were just savagely cut for firewood. Its remains are in the museum of the artist in Lviv, and a damaged statue of "Good Shepherd" is in the Museum of Art of Hutsul and Pokuttia in Kolomyia.
